The national women's football team, Banyana Banyana, are set for a major boost ahead of the two 2024 CAF Women's Olympic Qualifiers against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, but it will also be one that is bittersweet.

South Africa's most capped player of all time, Janine van Wyk, is set for a recall after missing the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand earlier in the year.

Van Wyk, who played in 183 internationals for South Africa will become Africa's most capped player, male or female, if she plays in the two games.

The matches will however be Van Wyk’s swansong as she will call time on her illustrious career. Had it not been for an injury, the World Cup in Australasia would have been her final act in the national colours, however, Van Wyk said she wants to leave on her terms.

“This has been by far one of the hardest decisions of my life,” said the 36-year-old Banyana star.

“This decision has always been one I have wanted to make on my terms, and this is my time to say goodbye to football as a player while I watch the next generation shine.

“It has been my greatest honour and privilege to play this beautiful game, in particular playing for my country, which has and always will be the greatest gift football has ever offered me.”

The first game between the DRC and South Africa will be played on 25 October in Kinshasa.
