All eyes on Soweto Derby: Kaizer Chiefs take on Orlando Pirates | News Article

The big Soweto derby will take centre stage this weekend in the Premier Soccer League. Kaizer Chiefs will go head-to-head with Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s eagerly anticipated Premier Soccer League match at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.

Both teams, Chiefs and Pirates, look to build on their midweek victories over Cape Town Spurs and Sekhukhune United respectively.

The Amakhosi managed to snap their three-match winless streak by securing a 3-2 victory over Cape Town Spurs in Wednesday's league game while on the other hand, the Buccaneers also breathed a sigh of relief when they broke their four-match winless run with a 1-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in their league game on Tuesday earlier this week.

The Amakhosi are currently 7th on the table and the Buccaneers are down in 10th seeing both sides looking for league points. The Buccaneers are 2 points behind the Amakhosi on the log and a win for the Orlando Pirates will see them move up to 8th if other results go their way.

With the rich history of rivalry between these two sides, as much as they’re looking for league points, major bragging rights are also on the cards. These rivals have played one another 177 times and with the 178th game ahead, both are eager to win.

For this game, Kaizer Chiefs are the favourites as the game is being played on their home grounds. Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson says;

 “We are playing at FNB Stadium, we should have the tag of being the favourites. It’s Chiefs’ home game and there’s no better place to play it than the Calabash [the FNB Stadium]. Automatically we are favourites. It’d be a different thing if we were playing Pirates at Orlando Stadium. It’s about us going out there and maintaining the stats, which are five games on the trot.”

For the Pirates, their coach Jose Riveiro stated that their preparation included analyzing the opponent and being switched on mentally in order to claim the win.

The massive derby kicks off this afternoon at Soccer City kicks at 15:00.
