City win record fourth straight Premiership title─── MORGAN PIEK 08:04 Mon, 20 May 2024
“What I want for my players is to enjoy two or three days and then we have two days to prepare for the FA Cup final. But right now I don’t know what exactly the motivation is to do it because it’s difficult to find it when everything is done.”
Manchester City have been crowned as the English Premiership champions for a record fourth year in a row.
On Sunday the Citizens beat West Ham 3-1 at the Etihad thanks to a brace by Phil Foden and a score by Rodri to clinch the league ahead of Arsenal.
The Gunners in turn beat Everton 2-1 in London to finish as the runners-up, while over at Anfield, Liverpool, gave Jurgen Klopp the near-perfect send-off with a 2-0 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Aston Villa in turn were thumped 5-0 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, but they have done enough to qualify for the UEFA Champions League along with City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
The City boss, Pep Guardiola, who took the club to a next level and has won six of the last seven Premiership title as the manager, conceded that next season may well be his last in charge.
“The reality is I am closer to leaving than staying,” Guardiola.
“We have talked with the club and my feeling is that I want to stay now. I will stay next season and during the season we will talk, but, after eight or nine years – we will see.
“What I want for my players is to enjoy two or three days and then we have two days to prepare for the FA Cup final.
“But right now I don’t know what exactly the motivation is to do it because it’s difficult to find it when everything is done.
“But knowing the players and myself I know that when we are there, we will say why should we not win today? Why should we not work as much as possible to do what we have to do? And I know we are going to do it.”
On Saturday City will target a domestic double when they face Manchester United at Wembley in the final of the FA Cup.
