Manchester United’s surprise 2 -1 victory over City means Old Trafford will showcase some silverware this year.

Teenagers Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo scored in the first half for United.  City tried to find a way back into the game in the second half, but Erling Haaland could only find the crossbar before Andre Onana twice kept out long-range efforts from Kyle Walker.

Onana was, however, unsuccessful in keeping out a Jeremy Doku strike in the 87th minute, which gave City fans some glimmer of hope.  Seven minutes of stoppage time wasn’t enough time to score a second goal, giving United the win in an upset against the title holders and Premier League champions.

The victory might extend manager Erik ten Hag’s stay at the club even though speculation about the 54-year old Dutchman’s future is rife. Ten Hag became the first manager to beat Pep Guardiola’s City in a major domestic final and ended their 35-game unbeaten run in open play.

Guardiola had kind words for United’s manager and told Reuters:  “United have to take a decision. So, I don’t know, but of course he is a lovely person, an extraordinary manager.”
