Soweto giants Orlando Pirates have confirmed that head coach José Riveiro will lead the team for the final time on Tuesday evening after being granted an early release from his contract.

Earlier this year, Riveiro announced that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season.

However, he has now been granted an early release and is set to join Egyptian side Al Ahly. The Buccaneers will take on Golden Arrows in a PSL fixture on Tuesday night, marking Riveiro’s swansong with the club.

The 49-year-old coach has been strongly linked with a role at Al Ahly. While reports suggest the deal is close to being finalised, it remains unclear whether he will be appointed as head coach. He is expected to replace Marcel Koller, who was dismissed towards the end of last month.

Reflecting on his time at Pirates, Riveiro said he would always cherish the memories, having led the team to five cup finals and securing no fewer than five victories in the iconic Soweto Derby. “I want to express my sincere appreciation to Orlando Pirates for giving me the opportunity to leave before the end of my contract,” Riveiro said as he confirmed his early departure.

“As someone who has never found goodbyes easy, this moment is especially emotional for me. I’m deeply grateful to everyone at the club – from management and the technical team to the players and all those working tirelessly behind the scenes to support us.

“To the players, thank you for believing in the journey we shared and for giving your all on the pitch. And to the supporters, when I first arrived, I asked you to come out in numbers and back your team.

“You did that, and so much more. You turned every match into an unforgettable moment. Your passion is something I will carry with me forever. Thank you for allowing me to be part of this great club’s story.”

The nephew of the legendary Jomo Sono, Rulani Mokwena, is heavily linked with a return to Pirates after recently being axed by Wydad AC in Morocco. Mokwena’s dad, Julias Sono Hloae, is also a Buccaneers legend.

Tuesday night’s clash between Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows at Orlando Stadium will kick off at 19:30.
