Maema rallies Sundowns ahead of CAF Final return leg in Egypt─── MORGAN PIEK 14:17 Wed, 28 May 2025

Bloemfontein-born-and-bred Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema has called on his teammates to stay united as they head into a crucial clash in Egypt.
The Brazilians jetted off to Cairo on Tuesday ahead of the second leg of the CAF Champions League final against Egyptian side Pyramids FC.
The tie remains finely balanced after a 1–1 draw in the first leg, played in Pretoria over the weekend, albeit Pyramids have the advantage by virtue of the away goal rule. While the pressure is undoubtedly on the reigning Premier Soccer League champions, Sundowns have developed a reputation for delivering strong performances on the road in continental competitions.
Maema, a former Bloemfontein Celtic star and current captain of the Bafana Bafana CHAN team, stressed the importance of mental strength and team cohesion as they prepare for Sunday night’s decider.
“It’s our first final in so many years, and of course, we expected to win at home. We really wanted to take advantage of playing in Pretoria, but yeah, as you said, it’s unfortunate,” said Maema.
“It’s the final, so we just have to regroup, back one another, and stay focused. It’s only one game, 90 minutes, so we have to give everything. We need to play like our lives depend on it.”

Reflecting on the result, Maema remained positive despite his disappointment.
“I’m obviously disappointed with the draw, but I’m also aware that there’s still another game to play for. All we can do now is our best, and make sure we get the result we need.”
Commenting on the opposition’s performance, he acknowledged their quality: “You know, mistakes happen. We knew the kind of pressure and style they brought, those dangerous crosses and set pieces, and unfortunately, they took their chance. It’s just a disappointing result, but not the end.”
Sundowns will look to bring the trophy back to Pretoria when they face Pyramids FC in Cairo on Sunday. Kick-off is at 19:00.
