Vela Khumalo will coach the South African side in this year’s Cosafa Cup, which is set to take place in Bloemfontein from 4–15 June.

Khumalo, who also serves as the head coach of the South African U17 men’s national team, will be assisted by former Bafana Bafana star Reneilwe Letsholonyane. Molefi Ntseki has been appointed as Technical Advisor for the tournament.

The squad includes several players who were recently part of Hugo Broos’ preliminary team for the upcoming international friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. Khumalo has also called up individuals who are being considered for selection in the South African team that will compete in the 2025 African Nations Championship (Chan), co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from 2–30 August.

“We’re really looking forward to this tournament, especially since we’re playing at home in Bloemfontein. We can’t afford to compromise – this is another Bafana Bafana team, and I’m both happy and excited. Our goal is to go all the way and win the Cosafa Cup,” said Khumalo.

“I remember winning it the last time with coach Morena Ramoreboli when we shared the reins. This time, I’m leading on my own. It’s a great opportunity for us to showcase the quality of South African football. We’re on a good run and in a positive space.”

Safa Technical Committee Chairperson Jack Maluleke explained the original plan was for Khumalo and U20 Afcon-winning coach Raymond Mdaka to co-lead the side. However, Mdaka is currently in Chile attending the Fifa U20 World Cup draw and workshop, after recently guiding the SA U20 team to continental glory in Egypt.

“We decided to give coach Raymond a well-earned break,” Maluleke said.

Letsholonyane will also serve as assistant coach for the Chan tournament in August. The Cosafa squad is made up of players earmarked for Chan, including some recommended by coach Hugo Broos – players who were part of Bafana’s extended squad but didn’t make the final cut, giving them a chance to prove themselves on an international stage.

The playing squad includes the local star Masindi Nemtajela, who plays for Marumo Gallants in Bloemfontein but is on the radar of several big clubs such as Orlando Pirates following a stellar 2024/25 Premier Soccer League campaign.

South Africa will face Mozambique on Wednesday afternoon (4/6) at 15:00 at the Toyota Stadium in their opening game of the Cosafa Cup.
