Bafana Bafana defender Nkosinathi Sibisi has been named the new permanent captain of Soweto giants Orlando Pirates, just days before the start of the 2025/26 domestic season.

In line with club tradition, the Pirates players voted for their captain, and Sibisi was chosen to take over the leadership reins from Innocent Maela.

Maela had served as club captain since 2022, before deciding to hang up his boots at the end of the 2024/25 season.

Sibisi joined the Buccaneers in 2022, after making exactly 100 appearances for Lamontville Golden Arrows. A lifelong Pirates supporter, Sibisi said captaining the team is an incredible honour.

During the recent Premier Soccer League Awards, Sibisi, was named as the PSL’s Defender of the Season for 2024/25.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d one day captain such a massive institution, such a great club,” Sibisi said.

“I grew up supporting Pirates, so to be given this responsibility is both a privilege and an honour.

“I honestly never imagined this day would come, but I’m truly grateful to the club for believing in me.”

Known for his quiet leadership style, Sibisi admitted he’s not the most vocal figure in the dressing room but believes in leading by example.

“There’s always healthy competition within the squad,” he said.

“Last season didn’t start well for me — I was on the sidelines for a while. But I’ve always believed you don’t have to be on the pitch to make a contribution. That’s the role I try to play in the team.

“I’m not the loudest guy, but I lead through my actions. I finished last season strongly, and I’m hoping to carry that momentum into the new campaign.”

Thapelo Xoki and Mbekezeli Mbokazi will act at the Pirates vice-captains.

Orlando Pirates will kick off their 2025/26 season on Saturday at 15:00 when they face Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarter-finals.
