Bafana dealt another blow as Rayners withdrawn ahead of World Cup Qualifier─── MORGAN PIEK 13:36 Tue, 07 Oct 2025

The national football team, Bafana Bafana, has been dealt another blow ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe in Durban.
Mamelodi Sundowns striker Iqraam Rayners was withdrawn from the squad on Tuesday due to undisclosed medical reasons and has been replaced by Orlando Pirates forward Evidence Makgopa.
Rayners’ withdrawal is a significant setback, especially since he scored a goal during Bafana’s 3-0 win over Lesotho in Bloemfontein in September.

On Monday, coach Hugo Broos confirmed that star Orlando Pirates attacking midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has also been ruled out after sustaining an injury against Siwelele FC over the weekend during their 1-0 Carling Knockout Cup round-of-16 win at Orlando Stadium.
In Mofokeng’s place, the diminutive Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala has been called back into the squad.
Broos said it’s unfortunate that some players miss out due to injury, but it’s also positive to have players such as Khuliso Mudau and Sphephelo Sithole available. He expects a tough match on Friday and wants to field a strong team.
“If you talk about players who are back, you think of Khuliso Mudau and Sphephelo Sithole,” said Broos.
“You know, those players have always been very important for the team. It was a pity that we couldn’t select Sithole for a year because of his injury, and also unfortunate that we couldn’t select Khuliso in September due to issues with his club.
“So, having these players back is very important for the team. Every game is different.

“Last year, when we played against Zimbabwe and won 3-1, we played well, but Friday will be a totally different game. I expect a very motivated Zimbabwean team that will try to take points from us.
“But on the other side, I believe we will also have a strong team on the pitch next Friday. Let’s see what happens, but I’m very happy with the guys who are back.”
Friday’s qualifier at Moses Mabhida Stadium kicks off at 18:00.
