The Bloemfontein-based Premier Soccer League club Marumo Gallants have officially confirmed the appointment of Jamil Benouahi as their new head coach.

The move follows the departure of 28-year-old Frenchman Alexandre Lafitte, who was axed by the struggling club after being on suspension since the start of March. Lafitte had been suspended for failing to meet club obligations, while a string of disappointing results left Gallants hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone – surviving only on goal difference.

Julien Outrebon and Trevor Mathiane, who have been serving as co-caretaker coaches during the interim period, will remain at the club as Benouahi’s assistants.

Benouahi becomes the club’s fifth head coach since Gallants relocated to Bloemfontein ahead of the 2024/25 domestic season, highlighting a turbulent period for the side as they continue their fight for top-flight survival.

While Lafitte has endured a terrible 2026, he did guide the club to the Carling Knockout Cup final last year, were the lost to Orlando Pirates.

Confirming the appointment on Tuesday, the club expressed confidence that the Moroccan-born tactician can steer the team away from relegation danger.

“Marumo Gallants F.C. has appointed Jamil Benouahi as the club’s new head coach, following the recent parting of ways with former head coach Alexandre Lafitte,” the club said in a statement.

“Benouahi, who was born in Fès, Morocco, holds a UEFA Pro Licence and brings valuable international coaching experience. He has worked across North and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as in the Gulf region, and is known for his tactical adaptability and structured approach to the game. Most recently, he coached Rahimo FC in Burkina Faso.

“The club is confident that Benouahi’s expertise, leadership, and fresh perspective will contribute positively to the team’s performance as Marumo Gallants continues its campaign for the remainder of the season,” the statement added.

“Benouahi will be supported by assistant coaches Outrebon and Mathiane, along with the club’s technical staff, as Gallants look to bring stability and consistency to the squad during this critical stage of the campaign.”

“Marumo Gallants F.C. remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, governance, and performance both on and off the field as the team prepares for the remainder of the season.

“The club also thanked its supporters, partners, and stakeholders for their continued backing during a challenging period.”

It is understood Benouahi has signed a deal until the end of the season, with an option to extend his stay in Bloemfontein.
