It was a fitting end to a tournament that showcased football at its very best. The two standout teams of the competition went toe-to-toe for more than 100 minutes before substitute Ferran Torres etched his name into Spanish football folklore with the decisive strike in the 106th minute.

For much of the evening, Spain and Argentina cancelled each other out in a tense tactical battle. Spain dominated possession, as they had throughout the tournament, patiently probing for openings against an Argentine defence that refused to buckle. 

Argentina, meanwhile, remained dangerous on the counter-attack, with Julián Álvarez and Lionel Messi both threatening to produce one final moment of magic.

Both goalkeepers were outstanding. Spain’s Unai Simón produced several crucial saves to deny Argentina, while Emiliano Martínez once again showed why he is regarded as one of the world’s finest shot-stoppers, frustrating Spain time and again during regulation time.

As the match drifted towards what appeared to be an inevitable penalty shootout, Spain finally found the breakthrough. A flowing move sliced open the Argentine defence before Torres calmly slotted the ball beyond Martínez to send a sea of red-clad Spanish supporters into delirium.

Argentina’s hopes of forcing one final twist suffered a major blow when Enzo Fernández was shown a red card in the 93rd minute, leaving the South Americans with ten men for the remainder of extra time. 

Despite throwing everything forward, the reigning champions could not find an equaliser as Spain expertly managed the closing stages.

When the final whistle sounded, Spanish players collapsed to the turf in celebration, while their Argentine counterparts were left heartbroken after falling agonisingly short of defending the title they won four years ago.

There were, however, ugly scenes after the match. Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes was involved in an altercation with Spain’s Eric Garcia, appearing to grab him by the throat before wrestling Gavi to the ground and confronting him while still holding his substitute’s bib.

The triumph completes another golden chapter in Spanish football history. Having already conquered Europe, La Roja have now reclaimed football’s biggest prize and reaffirmed their status as the dominant force of the modern era. 

Their possession-based style, tactical discipline and remarkable squad depth proved too much for every opponent they faced during the tournament, while they conceded just one goal throughout the global showpiece.

Spain’s road to glory was anything but straightforward. They eliminated Portugal in the Round of 16, edged past Belgium in the quarter-finals and then produced a clinical performance to beat France 2-0 in the semi-finals. The final hurdle, however, was undoubtedly their toughest as they overcame Lionel Scaloni's experienced Argentina side in a contest worthy of the occasion.

For Argentina, it was a brave defence of their world title. They knocked out Cape Verde, Egypt, Switzerland and England on their journey to the final, displaying the resilience and quality that have defined La Albiceleste in recent years. 

While the dream of back-to-back World Cup titles ultimately slipped away, they leave the tournament with their heads held high after another outstanding campaign.

The 2030 Football World Cup promises to be another historic edition. The tournament will be hosted across six countries on three continents as football celebrates 100 years of World Cup history.
