Heavyweights Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns settled for a share of the spoils, drawing 1-1 at a sold-out FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The first half was goalless, but Amakhosi claimed the lead with Langelihle Phili’s first goal for the Soweto club, before the Brazilians hit back via Cassius Mailula.

Chiefs remained top of the log with seven points from three matches, while Sundowns are sixth on four points – having played one game fewer thus far.

First goal

AmaZulu FC maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 2-0 victory over Siwelele FC at Kings Park Stadium. Mlondi Mbanjwa opened the scoring for AmaZulu in the 20th minute, netting his first goal of the season.  

The hosts doubled their advantage in the 32nd minute when Thandolwenkosi Ngwenya claimed his fifth goal in only four matches this season.

The win lifted AmaZulu into second place on the log, level on points with leaders Kaizer Chiefs, while Siwelele remain rooted to the bottom of the standings with just one point from three matches.

In Polokwane, Sekhukhune United returned to winning ways with a convincing 2-0 victory over Polokwane City in the Limpopo Derby at Seshego Stadium. It took just eight minutes for Sekhukhune to open the scoring in the Limpopo Derby through Tshepo Mokoena, with the winger netting his third goal of the season. 

They scored again in the 20th minute when Ngoanamello Rammala scored his second goal in three matches.

League standings

The result lifts Cedric Kaze’s side to third place in the league standings, while Polokwane, on the other hand, suffered their first league loss of the season and dropped to seventh.

The KwaZulu-Natal derby between Durban City and Richards Bay ended in a 1-1 draw at the Chatsworth Stadium, as both teams remained winless in the new season. 

The Natal Rich Boyz opened the scoring early on after a fine strike from Nqaba Xulu, but a second-half own goal from Thembela Sikhakhane handed the Citizens a share of the spoils.

And in Durban, Milford FC racked up a second successive win when they overcame fellow rookies Kruger United 2-1 at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium. Both teams were goalless at halftime, but Kruger opened the scoring in the second half with an excellent goal by Khethukuthula Ndlovu. 

Milford, down a man after Menzi Chili was shown a red card, levelled the scores in the 69th minute with Sicelo Masilela scoring with a diving header.  Substitute Thabane Mabena scored the winning goal seven minutes later.
