Harry Kane has finally reached the summit of world football, with the England captain crowned the 2026 Ballon d’Or winner in London on Monday night following a remarkable season for Bayern Munich and his country.

The 33-year-old striker claimed football’s most prestigious individual honour after scoring an extraordinary 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country during the 2025/26 campaign. He finished ahead of France international Kylian Mbappé and Spanish teenage sensation Lamine Yamal to become the first Englishman to win the award since Michael Owen in 2001.

Kane’s triumph brings an end to a 25-year wait for English football and places him among an exclusive group of players from his country to have lifted the famous golden trophy. Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Owen were the previous English winners. There is also a poignant connection to Keegan, the Liverpool and Newcastle United great who passed away in July at the age of 75.

For Kane, however, the achievement represents far more than a personal milestone. It is recognition of years of consistency, hard work and determination to establish himself among the best players in the world.

His prolific form helped Bayern secure the Bundesliga title, the German Cup and the German Super Cup. He also finished as the leading scorer in Germany’s top flight for the third consecutive season, while his 14 goals in the UEFA Champions League helped the Bavarians reach the semi-finals.

Kane also made his mark on the international stage, scoring six goals at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the Three Lions secured a third-place finish. England fell short of lifting the biggest prize in international football, but their captain once again demonstrated his importance to the national team.

Speaking after receiving the prestigious accolade, Kane reflected on the hard work behind his success, acknowledging the roles played by Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich and England in helping him reach the pinnacle of the game.

“My journey wasn’t straightforward. I wasn’t the kid who went straight to the top,” said Kane.

“I had to experience the downs. I had a lot of loan moves, and I had to fight my way to be the very best right now.”

He also had an inspiring message for aspiring footballers, emphasising the importance of perseverance and self-belief.

“For any young boy or girl wanting to achieve their dreams, anything is possible with hard work, when no one else is watching, to go through the ups and downs, to learn through resilience, determination and self-belief.”

The Ballon d’Or ceremony at London’s Palladium Theatre provided a fitting setting for a historic occasion, with Kane becoming only the fifth Englishman to win the men’s award since its introduction in 1956.

His success inevitably draws comparisons with Owen, whose 2001 triumph remains one of the defining moments of English football in the modern era. Owen claimed the award after a sensational year with Liverpool, helping the Merseyside club win the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup during a memorable 2000/01 campaign.

Now, 25 years later, Kane has followed in Owen’s footsteps, adding his name to English football’s illustrious Ballon d’Or roll of honour after a season of extraordinary individual achievement.
