This is the third year that Goldfields Mall hosts the Madiba Walk in conjunction with Rotary International.
Dulcy Harris from Rotary explains more about the event:
Last year, the event saw over 1 300 participants. It was borne from the need of working people, who cannot actively participate in Madiba Day during working hours, to also do their bit for charity. Hence they can now participate after work.
This event has grown in leaps and bounds since its inception, and now also boasts of a 10km registered race.
Together with the entrance fee, participants are requested to donate dry foods, non-perishables or pet food, and this then gets distributed to the families in need, the SPCA and Claws animal charity. The entry fee gets used to buy additional food and 400 X 5kg bags of mielie meal.
On 9 August, National Woman’s Day, Rotary Goldfields Sunset and Thabong SAPS, Crime Prevention Unit and Community Police Forums will run a Campaign Against Woman and Child Abuse in the informal settlements. They move door to door campaigning, while at the same time identifying homes in desperate need and hand out 400 food parcels on this day.
