To commemorate this momentous occasion, OFM broadcasts live from the mall, 09:00 – 12:00, 26 – 30 October, and again 09:00 – 12:00 on 31 October for the official birthday celebrations, during which the grand prize winner of the mall’s birthday competition will also be announced.

Celebrating A Decade of Shopping at the Heart of Welkom  

When Goldfields Mall opened their doors on the 28th of October 2010, visitors to the centre were welcomed into a modern one stop shopping environment with a pleasant atmosphere.

Goldfields Mall was created and developed by Retail Africa who are renowned for their innovative and successful shopping centres developed throughout South Africa, together with the architecture firm Boorgertman & partners.  The ultra-modern 36 000 m² shopping centre was created, which now currently falls under the umbrella of Redefine Properties.

The architecture ties in with the existing Goldfields Casino, the centre boasts with luxurious details, high ceilings and atriums. With all the high atriums and windows there is an abundance of natural light within the centre

Even the tiles and flooring is unique to the centre with small golden tiles scattered amongst the bigger tiles, to remind all the shoppers of the rich mining history the town offers, shoppers will also be able to rest while shopping on the unique furniture that was specially designed and made for the centre.

In typical Retail Africa style the centre was designed with people in mind. Detail that were brought to mind when considering the shopper was our 3m high windows to bring in the natural light, our entrances with drop off facilities as you would find at a private hospital making for easy wheel chair accessibility, as well as our outdoor piazza with restaurants.

The centre is easily accessible with entrances from Stateway and Buiten Street, the parking area boasts with a taxi drop off zone, KFC and McDonalds drive thru’s, there are also over 1 400 parking bays. The centre also has convenient gates for pedestrians to enter the centre safely.

During the past 10 year the centre has under gone a few changes, an addition of 1 789m² to accommodate store expansions such as Truworths and Woolworths, a McDonalds drive thru and currently undergoing expansions of existing stores creating a favourable tenant mix.

Visitors to the Piazza are familiar with our Rhino an enormous and strangely realistic shape of Mapompana, “The Short Fat One”. This larger-than-life solid concrete sculpture of a rather chubby rhinoceros hints at the fact that the area surrounding Welkom was once a flood plain roamed by mammoth animals in pre-historic times.

The sculpture also celebrates the success of Welkom’s gold-mining industry, and is a subtle reminder of the famous gold-clad statuette of the ancient Mapungubwe Rhinoceros, South Africa’s oldest artefact of animal form, which was excavated in 1933. Mapompana was conceptualised and executed by Francois Visser and Steven Delport of Dionysus Sculpture Works under the guidance of world-renowned artist, Angus Taylor

 Although things look the same on the outside there are always ongoing changes within the centre, but the one thing that remains true is the friendly warm shopping environment making Goldfields Mall the Heart of Welkom.
