The son that former President Nelson Mandela helped bring into the world 23 years ago was stabbed during an argument in Bezuidenhout Valley last Saturday.

He was the Nqakula's second-born and, according to a report in The Sowetan, he was a fun-loving 23-year-old working on a career in rap when he was stabbed to death.

Carlos Higuera, 24, is in custody after his arrest in connection with Chumani Nqakula's death and is expecting to be sent for observation after it emerged that he had switched medication for schizophrenia two days before Nqakula's stabbing.

During his appearance in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court, his father George told the magistrate that his son was on medication after suffering two losses in succession in his own life.

In 2010, his girlfriend and his mother died and he started taking medication shortly after that.

EWN reported that African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Department of International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane were among the mourners supporting Chumani's grieving mother, his father former State Security Minister Charles Nqakula and his siblings at the funeral service in Bruma, east of Johannesburg.

Anecdotes were being shared and he was described as a sensitive and caring person.

Charles Nqakula spoke as though his son were present, and said the Higuera family was just as distraught as they were.

When Mandela died in 2013, Mapisa-Nqakula shared a fond memory with Sapa of how Mandela took charge when she suddenly went into labour with Chumani in Johannesburg at her flat in the city.
