Police are continuing to bring hope to the children of fallen officers through initiatives aimed at empowering and uplifting young people across the country.

A total of 55 South African Police Service Education Trust (Sapset) beneficiaries from all nine provinces, currently in Grades 10, 11, and 12, attended a three-day Leadership Camp held in Krugersdorp, Gauteng, from Sunday (29/3) to Wednesday (1/4).

“From pain to purpose”, the overall sentiment shared by all those who attended this year’s South Leadership Camp, said national police spokesperson, Lt. Col. Amanda van Wyk.

Guidance

Launched in 2024, the camp aims to provide structured guidance on tertiary education pathways, leadership development, and personal growth, enabling beneficiaries to realise their full potential.

Since its establishment in 2010, the trust has raised more than R21 million and assisted with the educational and stationery needs of more than 1,900 children of fallen members.

National police commissioner, Gen. Fannie Masemola, met with the learners, many of whom lost their parents in the line of duty, and offered words of encouragement.

“You can become anything you want to be when you put your mind to it. The sky is the limit. Stay dedicated and committed to achieving your goals,” he said.

Acting deputy national commissioner for support services and acting Sapset chairperson, Lt. Gen. Lineo Nkhuoa, said Saps presented various activities designed to empower and prepare learners for post-school opportunities.

“I encourage each one of you to leave this camp not only with new knowledge, but with a renewed sense of purpose and a clear understanding of the leader within you,” said Nkhuoa.

Among the guest speakers was Dr Ayanda Sibaya (36), a Sapset beneficiary and now an ambassador. She shared her journey with the learners, encouraging them to persevere despite challenges. Sapset made it possible for Sibaya to continue pursuing her tertiary goals, a dream she shared with her father, who was killed in 2017.

Through sponsorship, each beneficiary in Grades 10 and 11 received a backpack, headphones, and a bluetooth speaker, while those in Grade 12 received a backpack, headphones, and a laptop.
