NWU Gallery curator Sheryl Msomi joins Yolanda Maartens on OFM Art Beat to share more about the two exhibitions, reflect on a successful year and discuss her excitement for the future of the arts.

These two exciting student exhibitions offer fresh perspectives on art, society, and creative expression. First up is NWU Zine Fest 2026, taking place from 19 to 23 October at the main gallery on campus.

The social anthropology student exhibition explores the zine as an accessible form of decolonial writing and creative expression. Through visual art, photography, poetry, personal narratives, collage and experimental design, students explore contemporary social issues and challenge established ways of seeing, knowing and representing the world.

From 26 to 30 October, the focus moves to the NWU Botanical Garden Gallery for the Annual Exhibition of the Visual Art for Education Students. The exhibition allows students not only to showcase their creative work, but also to gain practical experience in planning and presenting a professional exhibition.

Under the guidance of lecturer Linda Hesse, students explore personal experiences, social issues, collective histories and contemporary concerns through a variety of media and artistic approaches.

Together, the exhibitions highlight the importance of student art as a space for critical thinking, experimentation and new perspectives.
