The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of African Media Entertainment (AME) Dave Tiltmann, chats to the OFM Business Hour about the media group’s 7% growth in revenue over the 2022/23 financial year.

The improvement in the group’s financial performance has been attributed to revenue generated from radio sales – the star performers in this regard being Algoa FM and OFM. This revenue at AME amounts to over R268 million. Listen below:

For context’s sake: Established in 1997, AME owns two unique and distinct radio brands: Algoa FM, which broadcasts from the Garden Route to the Wild Coast; and OFM, which broadcasts in the Free State, North West Province, Northern Cape and Southern Gauteng. The company also has a strategic interest in HOT 1027, South Africa’s only commercial classical music radio station which broadcasts across Gauteng.

On the digital and media front, it owns United Stations, a specialist radio sales house, MediaHeads 360, a strategic marketing and content producer, Moneyweb, whose flagship product moneyweb.co.za is South Africa’s premier online source of investment information and the Central Media Group which includes OFM, Digital Platforms, and Mahareng Publishing.

AME's improved results

·        Operating profit is up 16% to R46,2 million

·        Net profit before tax is up 23%

·        Following the publication of the group’s financial performance, AME shares lifted by 5% to R32 per share.

Niche-centric strategies yield results for AME

“If we look at the overall business, we’ve got some great strategies in place, particularly around the two radio businesses – Algoa FM and OFM. And their focus is on hyperlocal activity with Moneyweb focusing on a niche top-end business cycle,” said Tiltmann.

The imminent launch of audio player

The AME CEO says media companies in first-world markets, like the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia, have developed audio players for their brands, hence AME’s own movement in this direction, which is a first for South Africa, said Tiltmann. The media group is eyeing early July to launch the project.
