After much criticism against the North West Tourism department from opposition parties in relation to the delayed Orkney Hotel School project in 2018, the department says contractors are already on site and most of the work has been done.

The departmental spokesperson, Dineo Lolokwane, tells OFM News that the department managed to successfully finalise the appointment of the contractors.

In 2018 the Democratic Alliance (DA) lambasted the department for the snail pace at which the construction of the school took place since the hand-over of the building structure in 2015 which was donated by Anglo Gold Ashanti. The party leader, Joe McGulwa, earlier in a statement said the DA would stop at nothing in making sure that the school is up and running, with the hopes of creating more jobs for the unemployed youth.

In a statement in 2018, the department invited tenders to renovate the building intended to be utilised as the third Hotel School in the province, in the Dr. Kenneth Kaunda District, to a tune of R13.7 million. Lolokwane says work commenced early January.

The hotel school is expected to develop and train young people in hotel administration, hospitality and many other courses related to the Tourism industry. Lolokwane says the portion of the building valued at R3.7 million, comprising of an office building, the house, and kitchen, have since been secured by a security company contracted by the North West Tourism Board, to prevent vandalism, while awaiting renovations that will restore it to be habitable and ready for learning and training.

The department continues to constantly engage with Anglo Gold Ashanti on progress made and other processes.

“The tender will further benefit locals as most of the material that will be used during the renovation will be procured locally and priority, in terms of jobs, will be given to young, local unemployed youth,” she concluded.
