Rouxville protestors released on bail─── 16:37 Wed, 29 May 2019
Twenty people who were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property in Rouxville were handed bail at R500 each by the Local Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon and are expected back in court on July 2.
Police spokesperson, Yanga Ngcukana, told OFM News that the twenty appeared briefly and the case was postponed to allow the suspects to seek legal aid.
The community members were arrested on Monday evening after they took to the streets and barricaded roads with burning tyres and rocks, demanding jobs and service delivery.
The disgruntled members Monday night stormed and broke into the ANC constituency office in the area.
He said they damaged and vandalised the offices, breaking windows and doors in the process.
Community members were protesting, saying the current employment strategy that is used by the municipality only favours certain people and not the rest of the community. They want the current application process to be scrapped and a new system to be introduced.
Ngcukana said the court was packed with community members in support of the accused. He says no disturbances were reported and the situation is still calm.
