The ANC Bojanala’s Interim Regional Committee (IRC) deputy convenor who was hospitalised after the attack on him in the basement of the Rustenburg Civic Centre has passed on.

Abbia Modise was admitted to the Rustenburg Hospital with head, face, and body injuries following an attack in 2020. The ANC Chief Whip in the Provincial Legislature, Paul Sebegoe, informed the members of the Provincial Legislature during motions without notice on Tuesday, about his passing.

OFM News previously reported that the police in the province were probing the attack on Modise, who was allegedly attacked by a group of unknown people in the basement of the Rustenburg Civic Centre while en route to a meeting of the ANC Bojanala Working Committee. Sebegoe says they are shocked by the passing of Modise, who was hospitalised following the attack.

“Comrade Modise assumed the position of acting deputy convenor of Bojanala - which is the biggest region of the ANC in the North West - following the passing of the interim regional committee's Mmule Maluleka and was charged with the responsibility of arranging the upcoming regional elective conference. Honourable speaker, the ANC conveys its heartfelt condolences with Modise’s family and the ANC in the North West and the entire mass democratic movement. We wish them fortitude in this movement of grief,” he adds.

Meanwhile, in the Provincial Legislature, the EFF provincial secretary, Papiki Babuile, sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased. “We know him as a leader who contributed to the struggle of this country and we are saying may his soul rest in peace,” Babuile adds.

In 2020, police spokesperson, Aafje Botma, confirmed to OFM News that a case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) is being investigated after Modise was admitted to a Rustenburg Hospital with head, face, and body injuries following the attack.

The ANC Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) spokesperson, Kenny Morolong, said instigators and perpetrators of violence have no place in the ANC, they must be unmasked, exposed, and ultimately subjected to the discipline of the movement and criminal processes. Morolong indicated that the attackers, who he describes as hooligans who were allegedly driving a BMW sedan and Toyota bakkie, sped off immediately after assaulting Modise. He has described the attack on Modise as an act of barbarism and cowardice.
