The North West is set to fast-track the rebuilding of houses of residents affected by the recent heavy rain which caused floods across the province.

At least R35 million will be used to fix 1200 houses damaged by the recent floods in February.

The MEC for Cooperative Governance, Mmoloki Cwaile, says independent contractors will be roped in to come and assist by building and fixing these houses. At least seven municipalities, including Matlosana, Moses Kotane, and Ratlou, have recorded several houses that were damaged by the floods that caused havoc in February.

Cwaile says more houses will be assessed.

“When we look at Taung, as an example, about 186 houses have been affected but we are going to further assess 182 more. [That] means we are going to have [about] 376 houses that we must respond to around Taung. Whether you go to Kagisano Molopo and Moses Kotane we will make [the] intervention,” he adds.

The province has approached the National Department of Human Settlements to seek permission to repurpose its 2020/21 grant. The province has also made an application to roll over this amount to ensure successful intervention in dealing with flood-related damages.

According to a statement by premier Job Mokgoro, after thorough assessments by municipalities, about 647 houses were found to have been damaged by floods, and they mostly entailed mud houses, self-built houses, and RDP houses.

In Greater-Taung, 186 households were affected with an extra 182 that still required further assessment. In Kagisano Molopo it was 21 households that were affected, Moses Kotane had 4 households and Moretele had 3 households that had been impacted by the floods.

The City of Matlosana had 198 households affected, Tswaing 22 households, Ratlou 14 households, and Ramotshere Moiloa had 17 households affected by the floods.
