Renovations at FS trauma hospital still under way | News Article

Free State’s foremost trauma hospital, Pelonomi, will have a newly built maternity ward by the end of the 2023/24 financial year.

The provincial premier, Sisi Ntombela, explained that the building of the ward in the troubled hospital will be completed by then.

This comes after operations at the ward were badly affected after the ward was flooded due to leaking pipes.

The incomplete maternity ward was previously blamed for the ongoing shortage of beds at the facility as there were only four theatre beds being shared between the surgical and maternity wards.

The Health Minister, Joe Phaahla, revealed that the contractor who was supposed to complete the ward has “terminated” his agreement with the hospital with the ward being 40% complete. The hospital recently had to deal with patients who described frustration over delayed surgeries.

In addition, it seems the hospital is without a CEO as the previous one, Baesi Ramodula, was moved to Health’s headquarters.

Pelonomi workers, including doctors and nurses, recently downed tools accusing the provincial management of flaunting the health care and safety protocols. The hospital has also recently been flooded with sewage spillages at the parking lot of the mortuary.
