Provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, Sipho Towa, earlier confirmed to OFM News that six passengers had died after an accident on the R30 between Allanridge and Bothaville outside Welkom.

Towa said that during the accident in the early hours of Saturday morning, five people were also injured and transported to the hospital after the minibus was submerged in water, while seventeen people were rescued.

Twelve others did not sustain any injuries.

In a statement issued by the Department, Bulwane said that Provincial Traffic Officers deployed to the site tried to warn the driver to reduce his speed, but their efforts were in vain.

It is alleged passengers in the vehicle reportedly begged the driver to reduce his speed, but he chose to ignore them.

It is further alleged that the driver then lost control of the vehicle, it overturned and fell into a large body of water next to the road.

Bulwane expressed his deep sadness and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives.
