According to the Department of Education’s spokesperson, Elias Malindi, the school will be temporarily closed the unnamed teacher was shot in cold blood whilst in her car outside the Rutanang Primary school premises in Geelhout Park.

Malindi says parents have been notified of the decision to close the school and will be notified when the school opens its doors for learning - which is expected to be this coming Monday.

“The department decided to close the school temporarily for the send-off process to unfold smoothly. The department wrote letters to parents to request them to take care of learners whilst they are home and also the department came up with a recovery plan and will be implemented immediately when learning and teaching resume on Monday,” He adds.

The MEC for Education, Wendy Matsemela, previously expressed that she was gutted by the killing of the 45-year-old teacher and further announced that teachers and pupils affected by the heinous crime would receive counselling.

The police have since launched a manhunt for the two assailants who shot the teacher outside the gate of the school in cold blood. 

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, previously said that according to information received, the deceased was shot at a close range by two suspects. The suspects are said to have fled the scene on foot and did not take anything from her car.

The Provincial Commissioner, Sello Kwena, expressed his shock over what he termed a “callous act of Gender-Based Violence (GBV).” He urged members of the community to work together with the police to ensure that the suspects are brought to book.
