Burnt items belonging to learners of the girls hostel at Dr Blok Secondary School in Bloemfontein could be seen scattered on the ground, with damaged wire furniture and the husk of the burnt-out building telling a story of loss.

The MEC of Education in the Free State, Tate Makgoe, visited the Heidedal-based school on Monday, following a fire that broke out at the hostel, late on Sunday.

Makgoe did a walkabout, and addressed learners - who were all safely rescued during the fire.

Makgoe assured the learners that they will be be supported with social workers, accommodation, food and any necessary items they may require.

“The focus will be on transforming the school and ensuring that it is safe for learners, teachers and staff,” he said.

He further added that learners should be trained how to use fire extinguishers, do fire drills and that safety should be made a priority.

While on site, the OFM News team observed smoke still emerging from the burnt building, with members of the Fire Department and the SAPS forensic team on the scene conducting their investigation.

According to Braam van Zyl, from the Fire Department, this investigation could take days.

Meanwhile, the  department is appealing to individuals, religious organisations and NGOs to donate items such as blankets, mattress, toiletries, bedding, food, clothes, school uniforms as well as bags to help these needy learners.
