Landfill site in Mangaung 'to get maintained regularly'─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 12:29 Tue, 12 Jul 2022
A contractor's services have been procured for 12 months by the National Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment to keep the South Park Landfill site in the Free State clean, as it has been a headache to Mangaung residents.
Maintaining the southern landfill site in Bloemfontein is on top of the list of things the national department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) have noticed they have to maintain after they placed the Mangaung Metro Municipality under administration. In a written reply to a DA member in the National Assembly, Werner Horn, the minister, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, stated the removal of solid waste around the metro will be prioritised. This was when Dlamini-Zuma was asked about progress on the administration process at the metro.

The minister’s reply further states that the commencement date of the service provider was 1 June 2022, however, the service has not been on site by the time of the reply. The Intervention Team planned to meet with the management from the service provider for planning and identification of critical activities.

The southern landfill site was previously inaccessible due to the lack of maintenance and illegal dumping around access roads. In response to cleaning the roads, law enforcement was deployed to assist with enforcement of illegal dumping around entrances. Workers of the Presidential Employment Programme (PEP) were deployed to assist with cleaning.

The landfill site was previously a problem for funeral-goers and funeral parlours to access the South Park Cemetery. This is because the condition of the road that leads up to the cemetery has become an illegal dumping site and piles of garbage is obstructing the flow of traffic. A few reasons as to why people are dumping their garbage in the road, instead of driving less than 500 metres to the South Park Landfill site, were provided to Bloemfontein Courant by residents, funeral parlour owners, as well as security personnel at the cemetery.
