Free State municipal workers protesting over unpaid salaries─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:36 Thu, 25 Aug 2022
Disgruntled workers of the Ladybrand-based Mantsopa Local Municipality are up in arms over the non-payment of their salaries.
Scores of angry workers are staging a protest at the headquarters of themunicipality as they demand answers and accountability over the non-payment of their salaries.
According to the shopsteward of the South African Municipal Workers' Union (Samwu) in the Mantsopa Local Municipality, Sello Thebe, workers received notifications late on Wednesday stating that there will be delays in salary payments this month. He says the system that the municipality is using doesn't recognise the labour unions such as Imatu and Samwu and union leaders continue to be undermined. He says the unions were not consulted by the municipality before handing out letters that stated delays in workers salaries for this month. Thebe adds that the employer doesn't recognise the workers.
