Northern Cape shares strategies to reduce crime─── MPHO MOHAPI 15:56 Thu, 13 Oct 2022
The crime rate in the Northern Cape is closely monitored to identify what causes the increase in criminal activities, and ways of identifying resolutions.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, says this media briefing is part of the NPA accounting to the people of the Northern Cape by informing them on the responsibilities of the NPA.
Meanwhile, the Northern Cape’s Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Livingstone Sakata, says the most common cases in the Northern Cape include murder, rape, robbery with aggravating circumstances, housebreaking, sexual offenses, corruption, fraud, and money laundering. He says the High Court, which is responsible for hearing these cases, has the challenge of being overwhelmed, which leads to cases being postponed for long periods.
”The prevalence of violence towards women, children and vulnerable groups of society, is seen seriously by the NPA. The convictions in these matters, in both High Court and Regional Courts, are closely monitored and form part of the monthly indicators and targets of the NPA”.
OFM News previously reported that the Northern Cape's NPA was expected to inform the public of its plans to fight crime. The NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane said the newly appointed Director of Public Prosecutions in the Northern Cape, Livingstone Sakata, would be addressing the public on plans and successes at a media briefing, scheduled for Thursday 13 October 2022.
