Bail granted to suspects who tried to bribe North West officer | News Article

Two suspects who attempted to bribe an officer of the law in the North West have been granted bail by the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court.

The 48-year-old Zuzumuzi Manqonyana and the 49-year-old Peter Selenga were arrested in Klerksdorp on Sunday 23 October 2022, after offering an investigating officer R50 000 to get rid of a docket involving their friend who is a former senior municipal official. The provincial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, says the pair were nabbed at the Hawks offices, moments after handing over R25 000 and a bottle of Glenfiddich whiskey to the investigating officer. Their vehicle was searched and R41 500 was allegedly also found. Mamothame says the two suspects are facing charges of corruption.

Meanwhile, the money and the vehicle have been seized for further investigation.

“The two suspects who the Hawks arrested for allegedly trying to entice an investigating officer with R50 000 and a bottle of whiskey, to get rid of a docket involving a municipal manager, were granted R10 000 bail each by the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court. Their matter was remanded to 31 January 2023 for further investigations,” adds Mamothame.
