The Department of Tourism is looking for candidates who will grab the opportunity of upskilling themselves in the hospitality industry.

The department, in collaboration with the Tourism World (Pty), is looking for suitable candidates in the Free State to join the 2023 Hospitality Youth Training Programme: Food and Beverages. It is explained that the programme targets unemployed youth to widen employment opportunities in the hospitality and tourism sector.

Applicants to the programme must be between the age of 18 to 35, and must have obtained their Matric with fluency in English or Tourism and Hospitality. Some of the requirements for those who wish to be considered for the programme include a curriculum vitae (CV) accompanied by a motivational letter. Those who have previously participated in the department’s learnership or skills development programme must declare that in the motivational letter.

The programme will run for 12 months, and short-listed candidates will be interviewed by a panel to determine their (candidates) suitability. Those who wish to enquire can contact 031-566-3999 or email sadha@calypsogroup.co.za. Applications must be sent to recruitment@calypsgroup.co.za.

In the North West, the Second Chance Matric programme has kicked off. The Department of Education encourages unsuccessful 2022 matric learners to grab the opportunity with both hands. The North West spokesperson for Education, Elias Malindi, explained that the primary purpose of the Second Chance Matric Programme is to provide support to learners who were unable to meet the pass requirements or who wish to upgrade their results in the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exam or the extended Senior Certificate (SC) exam. The programme also improves opportunities for employment and to pursue tertiary education studies. He added that there were many benefits of participating in the Second Chance Matric Programme.

Back in the Free State, in late 2022, at least 100 unemployed youth were given an opportunity to equip themselves with 4IR skills to create an income in the future.

On Monday, 5 December 2022, the Free State Premier Sisi Ntombela introduced a Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) digital learning skills programme. Ntombela’s spokesperson, Palesa Chubisi, said the 4IR Programme is a six-month programme offered by the University of Johannesburg. "The programme is expected to enable the beneficiaries to become independent, confident, and able to sharpen their usage of technology in the digital economy of the province and the country," she added.
