Police in Ditsobotla operating from dilapidated shack | News Article

The North West Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Public Works, Roads, Community Safety and Transport Management has expressed concerns over the Coligny Police Station which operates from a dilapidated shack in the Ditsobotla Local Municipality.

Last week, the Provincial Legislature visited various local municipalities in the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Municipal area in Mahikeng.

In a statement shared by the Provincial Legislature, Provincial Civilian Secretariat, Mpho Maleme, revealed that the station commander had misled the Provincial Commissioner after informing him that the station is in good condition and that no assistance would be required.

Maleme stated that the police station is operating from a dilapidated shack. The holding cells have not been functioning for the past five years, resulting in detainees being transported and held at neighbouring police stations. Toilet facilities are in an appalling state.

Other challenges that the committee encountered, include the lack of personnel which hinders service delivery, especially at night. It's alleged that the police station is currently functioning with three officers at night, inclusive of one female who most of the time is left alone to monitor the police station whilst the other two are called out to crime scenes. Among the issues raised is that the station is also functioning with one vehicle.

Meanwhile, a community member Israel Gabaotswe informed the committee that they have lost confidence in the station as it has failed to deliver services to residents of Coligny. Gabaotswe revealed how residents do not receive any feedback on cases reported and how drug dealers and other illegal perpetrators do as they please in front of them.
