While arrests have been made at Universitas following a recent crime spate, the area is still a hotspot for criminal activity, with student targeted for their cellphones and laptops.
OFM News previously reported that the Free State police arrested a 28-year-old man after another 20-year-old man, believed to be a student in Bloemfontein, was found lying in a pool of blood at student accommodation in Universitas.

District commissioner for Mangaung Metro, Major-General Arthur Adams, says they are concerned with the recent spate of attacks on students.
“They fall victim to a group of between three to four suspects, either on route to classes or on route to their residences,” he says.
He adds that while arrests have been made, it appears there are more groups targeting the areas. Adams is convinced there will be a breakthrough soon and that the collaboration between the protection services and the local police is going well. He also says that it is important to educate students and that they should be vigilant.
OFM News previously reported that the University of the Free State has vowed to enhance security with an additional off-campus security provider, following the attempted murder of a student.

“These are the type of things that we cannot prevent, like the two students being targeted gets reported to us, these are the ones we can’t prevent but react to the situation by apprehending the perpetrators,” Adams says.
