Police have launched a manhunt after nine armed suspects overpowered employees demanded money and bombed an ATM at a filling station in Block 5 at Kutlwanong, Odendaalsrus, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The Free State police spokesperson, Stephen Thakeng, explains that suspects fled in different directions at about 01:45 when they saw a private security company vehicle and the police. Shots were fired and the security company's vehicle was damaged. He says one of the suspects allegedly fled with a bag in his hands. Attempts to catch the suspects were unsuccessful.
“On 29 June 2023 at about 01:45 Odendaalsrus SAPS members and private security responded to an ATM bombing. At the crime scene, a white Fidelity plastic bag with R500 cash was found near a fuel pump and dropped by suspects when they were fleeing. Nine African males approached the employees and two were armed with guns. One of the petrol attendants was struck with a firearm on his forehead. The security officer alleged that two shots were fired in his direction and the window got shattered,” he says.
