A 37-year-old woman died, two months after she was drenched in petrol and set on fire, allegedly by her husband, on Tuesday, 4 July 2023.

It is alleged that her husband doused her in petrol and then set her on fire on 12 May.

The attack happened at the couple’s residence in Section A of Botshabelo.

"The victim grabbed a water bucket and managed to save her own life by extinguishing the fire. The suspect then locked his wife inside the house and denied her treatment. She only received treatment the next day.

A case of attempted murder was opened at the Botshabelo Police Station and Lebetsa was arrested," said Free State police spokesperson, Thabo Covane.

After two months in the Pelonomi Hospital, fighting for her life, Dolly Maitumeleng Lebetsa succumbed to severe burn wounds.

“Unfortunately, Lebetsa succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, despite bravely fighting for her life. She becomes the latest victim of the GBV pandemic, despite numerous awareness campaigns,” says the Free State Department of Social Development spokesperson, Thembile Nqabeni.

Free State MEC of Social Development, Motshidise Koloi, has expressed outrage about the woman’s death and has called on law enforcement agencies to improve their efforts in dealing with GBV incidents and put an end to these vicious killings

The reason for the brutal attack is being investigated by police.
