There have been many fires that have occurred in different parts of the city, especially at landfill sites.

Recently there was a fire in the field next to the Windmill Casino. As well as a petrol tanker that was burning on the N1 between the Walter Sisulu and Nelson Mandela off-ramps last night.

There were no severe injuries or deaths and the fire was contained without further major damage.

The Mangaung metro and SAPS operation took place at the Southern Landfill site where they were conducting a raid and evicting people who were living at the site.

But when they arrived there was already a fire burning at the site which was monitored by the relevant authorities.

Residents around the landfill sites remain concerned about the impact of smoke coming from the sites.

Residents close to landfill sites in Bloemfontein continue to suffer due to constant fires and have complained about several issues that they have because of constant fires close to them.

“We struggle with headaches and stuffed or runny noses, especially in the mornings.

We can't spend time outside, open windows or doors, and hang washing on the washing line. There is always a constant smell of smoke,” says Lizette Myburgh from Fauna.

She also mentioned she has noticed a thin layer of ash visible on the furniture, and it is impossible to keep out the smoke.

“I suffer from a type of asthma and use a machine to assist my breathing, but when the smoke comes up at night I struggle a lot with my breathing,” says Jan Truter, a Fauna resident.

Residents concerned about the air quality, can sign an online petition regarding the closure of the Northern Landfill Site, as provided by the DA's councillor for ward 44 in the north of Bloemfontein, Selmé Pretorius:  https://forms.gle/vZWDJx7Tr3BjhU9Z6 Residents have until 30 July to sign the petition.
