His conviction stems from occurrences that happened in Klipgat. The 67-year-old man resided there with the eight-year-old’s grandmother with whom he was in a relationship. These rape incidents occurred between January 2017 and December 2018.

When the grandmother left the house to perform errands, he would rape the child, according to evidence that was presented in court.

The child’s aunt noticed some odd behaviour by the child in December 2018 when she started crying nonstop and stopped playing with her friends.

“Upon enquiring, the complainant told the aunt about her sexual ordeal with the man. The matter was reported to the police and she was subsequently taken for a medical check, which confirmed that the child was violated,” said North West National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Henry Mamothame.

The 67-year-old man was arrested and later granted R1 000 bail, he went on trial in June 2022 and pleaded not guilty.

“The man took advantage of a child he was supposed to protect as she trusted him,” said prosecutor advocate Mummy Mosonodi. He was then sentenced to life imprisonment.
