North West nurse receives counseling after being raped─── LUCKY NKUYANE 13:13 Thu, 20 Jul 2023
A North West nurse from the Taung village is receiving counseling after she was attacked and raped while en route to work.
The nurse was raped on Sunday, 16 July 2023. The incident has since received condemnation from the MEC for Health, Madoda Sambatha. His spokesperson, Tebogo Lekgethwane, says Sambatha described the incident as devastating. He said the incident disregards women’s rights and safety and should never be normalised in communities.
Lekgethwabe says Sambatha has since called for the swift apprehension of the culprit by law enforcement agencies and for the justice system to enforce a harsh sentence to ensure that justice is served for the victim.
"We need to work hard to turn the tide of gender-based violence and should not accept such crimes against women. The rape of one woman is a degradation and limitation to all women. It is disturbing that this heinous act occurred against a health worker as she was on her way to render her services to save lives."
In April 2023, a nurse at Brits Hospital was shot dead by her ex-husband, a police officer, in the parking lot. According to the police, she was shot several times.
Sambatha says the murder of the pregnant woman was a gruesome experience that shocked the family and the hospital staff.
