The accused was sentenced for raping a 16 year old in March 2023. The victim had just left her aunt’s house in Schonkenville with two of her friends for a sleepover in Mbeki. The girls had an argument on their way, and the victim decided to no longer join the sleepover.

On her way back to her aunt’s house, she met an unknown man, later identified as Tshabalala, who walked with her without asking permission. He then pulled her into an open veld, where the rape took place. He threatened to kill her if she made any noise.

‘She was told to return to get R800’

Fearing for her life, she put up no resistance. He then took her to his home, where he raped her again. The following day, Tshabalala ordered the victim to bath and leave. She was told to return later to get R800 and not to tell anyone what had happened.

When the victim arrived home, she told her family about what happened and they accompanied her to the Tumahole police station to open a case of rape. 

“Fezile Dabi District Commissioner Major General Moses Makubo condemned such behaviour,“ police spokesperson Josephine Rani said, ”especially during women's month and applauded all the members involved for ensuring that such perpetrators end up behind bars and justice is served.”
