Retired police officer helps recover stolen municipal items | News Article

At least two suspects are on the run after stealing valuable items from the Masilonyana Municipal offices and Post Office in a small Free State town.

It’s alleged that on 19 August 2023, at about 00:30, it was discovered that there was a break-in at the offices of both the Masilonyana Municipality and Home Affairs based in Winnie Mandela town, formerly known as Brandfort. The Free State police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng said police registered a case for further investigations and it was discovered a burglar door was broken to gain entry.

On the same day of the burglary, at about 06:30, a retired police officer who was travelling from home to town saw two men with suspected stolen items. When they saw him they dropped the items on the ground and fled. He came closer to where the items were dropped and discovered electrical appliances which included computers, hard drives, keyboards, two curtains, an Absa Speed point, and a Home Affairs fingerprint machine.

All stolen items were recovered. “The manhunt continues for these two suspects. Anyone with information can contact  Detective Sergeant Albertus Mkhumbeni from the Brandfort Detective Services at 083 983 6363.”
