The official launch of the 2023 Tourism Month in the province happened at a camp-out experience at the Willem Pretorius Nature Resort, near Ventersburg. MEC Thabo Meeko engaged with tourism product owners and exhibitors, encouraging them to harness the potential of provincial events like Tourism SaamTrek and to immerse themselves in the province's abundant cultural heritage.

This year's Tourism Month is themed "Tourism invests in a green future". The launch of Free State Tourism Month seeks to raise awareness about the socioeconomic, cultural, economic, and developmental significance of the tourism sector. During the launch event, campers flocked in large numbers and enthusiastically participated in activities such as game drives, potjiekos challenges, and team-building exercises.

The Department of Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, in collaboration with strategic partners in the sector, including the Matjhabeng Local Municipality and the Lejweleputswa District Municipality, will host the annual Free State Tourism SaamTrek on 29 and 30 September at Phakisa Raceway near Odendaalsrus. This event is expected to draw tourists, travellers, and South Africans eager to explore the Free State and rediscover it as their preferred destination.
