The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) is set to decide on a trial date for an ANC Member of Parliament accused of murdering his wife in North West.

OFM News previously reported that former ANC Youth League leader Sibusiso Kula was arrested in January 2023 for allegedly murdering his wife Jennifer Motlhomi Kula.

Kula made another appearance in the Orkney Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (6/9) where his case was postponed to 13 September for the DPP to decide on transferring the case to the High Court.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Henry Mamothame, said Kula’s attorney argued against a further postponement, citing unreasonable delay by the state. He, however, says the state indicated that previous postponements were a result of incomplete investigations.

"Investigations have been completed and the state is ready to act on the awaited instruction from the DPP. Kula was also provided with a list of witnesses, as was instructed by the High Court when granting him bail.

He is currently out on R50 000 bail, granted by the High Court of South Africa, North West Division, following his appeal after the Orkney Magistrates’ Court decision to deny him bail.

Kula's arrest on allegations that he murdered his wife has caused an uproar within the ruling party with some calling for him to be suspended

However, the mother body structure has remained silent on his future within the movement.

Police reports revealed that Kula’s wife, Jennifer Mohlomi, was found murdered on 27 November 2022, in what seemed like a robbery.

She was found with a stab wound on her back but the object that was used for her alleged murder has not been recovered. The matter was reported by the medical facility when she was allegedly transported by the accused to receive medical attention.

"The accused told the police he was not present at his home when the incident occurred. Following thorough investigations by the police, he was linked to the alleged murder and was arrested on 20 January 2023, and charged with murder," Mamothame added.
