It’s alleged that Koloi and other suspects colluded to use R150 000 belonging to the Moqhaka Local Municipality, under the guise that the money would be spent on a sound system to be used during a Nelson Mandela memorial lecture.

The Free State MEC for Social Development – charged with corruption and fraud – is expected to make her court first court appearance on Friday (13/10) after she was arrested by the Hawks.

MEC Motshidisi Koloi is expected to appear at the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court to face charges of corruption, money laundering, and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act. On Thursday (12/10) she was arrested alongside two co-accused.

It’s alleged that Koloi and other suspects colluded to use R150 000 belonging to the Moqhaka Local Municipality, under the guise that the money would be spent on a sound system to be used during a Nelson Mandela memorial lecture. Koloi was a mayor of the Moqhaka Municipality in 2017 when the crime was committed.

The Hawks spokesperson, Zweli Mohobeleli, merely stated a Member of the Executive Council, a political advisor to the Matjhabeng Local Municipality, and a Chief Director are scheduled to appear before the Kroonstad Magistrate's Court on Friday (13/10).

The trio was arrested on Thursday by members of the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation Unit based in Bloemfontein. “This event never took place despite money having been used from the municipal bank account," Mohobeleli added.
