The Moqhaka mayoral committee member who’s accused of rape was denied bail yesterday (20/12) at the Viljoenskroon Magistrate’s Court and he has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Monday, 29 January 2024.

‘Investigations led by the police are continuing in the matter’

“The Kroonstad councillor’s bail was denied and he will remain in jail until his next appearance in January. He is charged with rape,” said NPA spokesperson Mojalefa Senokoatsane. “Investigations led by the police are continuing in the matter.”

The woman allegedly sought a ride in the early hours of Monday, 4 December because she knew him. After that, the accused allegedly drove to a farm in the district and sexually assaulted her.

The councillor was arrested on Monday, 4 December, and appeared in the Viljoenskroon Magistrate’s Court for the first time. Several political parties have been monitoring the case and attending court proceedings.

"We are monitoring the ANC's actions as justice is crucial for the innocent as well as the guilty. The member of the mayor's committee's alleged actions undermine the credibility of efforts to protect women and children in Moqhaka,” said DA Councillor Chris Dalton.
