“The weather service issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with disruptive rain and gusty winds leading to localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements and roads.”

Residents of Bloemfontein and surrounds have been warned of possible severe thunderstorms.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a yellow level 2 warning on Sunday (14/4) for the period up to Monday, which includes thunderstorms with hail and strong damaging winds across South Africa.

Mangaung spokesperson Qondile Khedama said the warning includes possible localised flooding in low-lying areas, informal settlements, and roads across the metro. Some roads will be closed due to heavy downpours. Residents are requested to pay attention to alerts and warnings.

The heavy rain could also impact the power supply and reduce visibility, which could lead to difficult driving conditions. Motorists must reduce speed and switch on their headlights.

SAWS, on its Facebook page, issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms with disruptive rain and gusty winds leading to localised flooding of susceptible formal and informal settlements and roads. It added that disruptive rainfall leading to localised flooding and property damage is expected in places along the Wild Coast and adjacent interior.

Concerns were raised about the flooded bridge on Fort Road near Centlec, opposite the Majakathata long-distance taxi rank in Bloemfontein. This was after an unidentified body was found floating in the flooded subway on Sunday (31/12).

More than 90 houses were heavily affected by heavy storms in the metro, with 250 homes damaged at Van Stadensrus.
