Sol Plaatje’s emergency services responds swiftly to multiple cases─── CASEY-LEE ANTHONY 11:20 Thu, 29 Aug 2024

“One of the key challenges faced was the absence of a nearby fire hydrant, which made the situation even more precarious. Despite this, our firefighters acted swiftly and efficiently, focusing on containing the fire and minimising damage.”
Sol Plaatje emergency teams have responded to eight distress calls, including incidents such as a motor vehicle crash, veld fires, shack fires, and massive house fires.
“At the height of these emergencies at 21:42 (on Tuesday), we received an urgent call regarding a shanty fire. After successfully extinguishing the flames, the crew proceeded to the nearest fire hydrant to refill the water tank,” said Sol Plaatje communications manager, Thabo Mothibi. “Just as the vehicle was being refilled, another call came in, this time for a house fire on Kekewich Street.”
“(It was) an extraordinarily hectic day for the municipality's emergency services."
'One of the key challenges faced was the absence of a nearby fire hydrant'
Emergency services arrived at Kekewich Street six minutes after receiving the phone call. The team found the front of the house was already engulfed in flames.
“One of the key challenges faced was the absence of a nearby fire hydrant, which made the situation even more precarious. Despite this, our firefighters acted swiftly and efficiently, focusing on containing the fire and minimising damage to the rest of the house.”
During the operation, the safety officer noticed a person in the burning house. He managed to gain entry and rescue a female resident, bringing her to safety.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to these dedicated men and women who not only minimised the damage to the property but saved a life. Their unwavering commitment and courage in the face of danger is commendable.”
The municipality recently received a new fire truck which allows them to attend to multiple call-outs at a time, after having to operate with a single fire truck for many years.
