A former Free State ANC chief whip has announced his defection to the MK Party over dissatisfaction with the ANC.

Vusi Tshabalala, who faced suspension by the ANC provincial executive committee following allegations of supporting independent candidates prior to the 2021 municipal elections, expressed frustration with what he called “unjust proceedings against him”.

After announcing his decision on Wednesday (11/12), Tshabalala criticised the prolonged investigations against him and accused the ANC leadership of mishandling his case.

“I was investigated for more than seven years. The so-called president signed the proclamation for these issues from Maluti-a-Phofung. There were wrongdoings before us, but we knew it was not our responsibility.”

He also criticised the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) and law enforcement for what he perceived as interference in municipal governance. “South Africa is becoming a joke when SIUs and police dictate how to run municipalities,” he said.

Tshabalala said he joined the MK Party to protect the interests of ordinary South Africans and pledged to fight for the empowerment of black citizens, even if it required personal sacrifices. “I am prepared to die fighting for a black child, for a black man to become a billionaire or millionaire.”

His political conscience remained clear, he said, and he claims he has never accepted money from anyone.

He took aim at some media houses, accusing them of promoting “biased narratives” that align with certain political interests. He also said the young generation suffers because of factions within the government.
