A teacher at the Dr Böhmer School of Skills in the Free State has been suspended following the circulation of a disturbing video on social media.

The 31-year-old educator was suspended by the Free State Department of Education after the footage, dated 26 March 2025, surfaced. The video shows an assault on a learner in the corridors of the school hostel, prompting public outrage and concern over learner safety within school premises.

Department spokesperson Howard Ndaba confirmed the incident and announced immediate action.

“The Department has unequivocally condemned this incident in the strongest possible terms and has launched a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault. The teacher has been suspended from his duties pending a full investigation into the incident,” stated Ndaba.

He emphasised the department’s unwavering commitment to the safety of all learners.

“The safety and well-being of learners and teachers are of utmost importance, and any form of violence or abuse will not be tolerated.”

Ndaba said the department is currently providing support to the affected learner and his family, acknowledging the emotional and psychological toll such an incident may have caused.

Affected learner supported

“We are committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment in our schools. The department is providing support to the affected learner and his family during this challenging time,” he added.

Ndaba said a case of assault has been opened, and the matter is now under police investigation. He reiterated that such behaviour is unacceptable and that the department will act decisively once the investigation concludes.
