Residents of the Vaal Triangle have been urged to ensure their gate motors are secured in a steel casing or bracket that is locked at all times, to prevent them from being stolen.

Security companies have noted with concern the rise in the theft of gate motors from various neighbourhoods in Gauteng.

Suspects also increasingly deactivate gate motors to access properties while on manual override. These gate motors can be sold for anything from R1,500 to almost R4,000 second-hand.

“There is a thriving black market for gate motor parts,” said Fidelity ADT Group spokesperson, Charnel Hattingh. Stolen gate motors are either stripped down and their various components, such as batteries, gearboxes, are sold individually.

“They are also sold as complete units to unsuspecting homeowners by these ‘access automation bandits’, as they are often referred to. Criminals are targeting homes across Johannesburg; some of the areas targeted are Bergbron in Greenside, Fairlands, Florida Glen, Northcliff, Helderkruin in the West Rand, and Vaal.”

Suspects often just place their hands through the gate if the gate motor is unsecured and installed right next to a “palisade-type” gate. They are then able to switch the gate to manual and access your property, she said.

In the past week, we have had multiple reports of stolen gate motors in these areas, said Hattingh.

Fidelity ADT has tips for safeguarding the gate motor against theft:

  • Make use of a good quality lock to secure the motor’s theft-resistant cage.
  • Combine mechanical anti-theft systems, such as traditional theft-resistant cages, with electronic notification devices.
  • Consider installing 180-degree beams that will monitor your gate.
  • Ensure that your gate motor is secured in a steel casing or bracket that is locked at all times.

“Placing barriers further from the house allows more time to respond if someone attempts a break-in,” said Specialist Investigator Mike Bolhuis. “For example, motion-activated lighting, cameras, or alarms installed along the fence or gate will alert you or a security provider early on, giving you valuable time to react.”

“Data shows that well-lit areas experience fewer break-ins and violent crimes. Strategic lighting near gates, entrances, garages, and darker areas also deters intruders.”

A simple, motion-activated outdoor light is one of the most effective and accessible home security measures. These lights can alert you to unwanted visitors trying to enter your home, he said.
